D.C.–based Remodelmate, a platform facilitating home renovation and remodeling projects, won first place in the final pitch competition at the 2018 AfroTech Conference, a gathering for African American technologists, startups and entrepreneurs. This year, the conference attracted more than 4, 000 techies, the site says.
We are beyond excited to win the #AfroTech Cup! Thank you to the judges for their tough questions, to the @Blavity + @AfroTech crews for a flawless and inspiring event, and to @gro_lens + @GrpFit for the camaraderie and competition. pic.twitter.com/KdoOumup77

Each year, AfroTech hosts a final pitch competition called the AfroTech Cup Competition where entrepreneurs take to the stage to vie for one cash prize and this year Remodelmate won, bringing home the $10, 000 cash prize. Remodelmate was selected out of 2,000 applicants, seven semi-finalists and three finalists.
Remodelmate was founded by Chad Hall in August 2016 out of 1776 DC. The startup aims to ease the process of setting up home renovation jobs.
Hosted by Blavity, Inc. in San Francisco this year, the third annual conference from Nov. 8-11 was sponsored by companies like Adobe, Amazon, WeWork, Facebook and many more.
Following the above tweet, Remodelmate made another statement about their competitors saying, “go support these companies. If not for the culture, for the sheer fact that they, like all of us at remodelmate, are working hard to build something beautiful and to make the dream come true. And, of course, support DC tech!”
Remodelmate wasn’t the only DMV startup represented in the competition, Bitcoin startup BitMari made it to the semifinals. This company uses blockchain to quickly and easily send money all over the world using bitcoin. Headquarted in Zimbabwe, the bitcoin startup’s only U.S. office is in the District.
